Background

Chess improves the ability to concentrate, focus, and calculate outcomes of one’s own actions. Research has also shown that playing chess is responsible for improved functionality on both left and right brain hemispheres.  This contributes to better data recall, problem-solving, creativity, and planning. Games like chess, logic problems and puzzles stimulate the critical thinking that is necessary for real life challenges.

Purpose and Expected Outcomes

This free program aims to teach the fundamental rules of chess to youth ages 8 and up.  The facilitator will create teaching moments to help the participants develop their critical thinking skills and sportsmanship. In our society, most competitive events dictate that there has to be a winner and loser.  In ASOP’s Chess Club we reject the concept of losing and reframe it as an opportunity for improvement.  Opportunities for improvement allow participants to identify and develop new strategies when facing different opponents. With improved mastery, chess can contribute to the reduction in peer pressure and delinquency and improve concentration, planning, and calculated outcomes of one’s own action.

Membership
